CHAMA CHA DEMOKRASIA NA MAENDELEO (CHADEMA)
STATEMENT ON MALAWI PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Chadema, Tanzania’s main opposition party congratulate Hon. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on winning Malawi’s presidential election. As a sister party sharing same values of democracy, human rights and free enterprise through the Democratic Union of Africa (DUA), Chadema commend the spirit and efforts demonstrated by the MCP and Hon. Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera in the recently held election.
Chadema also congratulate Malawians and their working institutions namely; the judiciary, defence and security forces and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for properly discharging their constitutional functions and ensured protection and respect for the people’s choice; the foundation for a true democracy. This is yet another clear lesson to most SADC member states, notably Tanzania, that for so long have hijacked and paralyzed such institutions, hence endangering peace and security in those countries and the region at large due to potential election violence
Chadema wish the MCP and the incoming President, Hon. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera all the best in delivering for the people of Malawi as promised during election campaign. Chadema guarantee the MCP a close and committed cooperation in fighting for and building a true democracy in the region through such forums as DUA.
